Our Winter Iceland Photo Tour, with multiple departures in 2025, 2026, and 2027 (see dates in the list above), is one of our most popular trips. Due to the time of year it takes place, it is always an excellent opportunity to enjoy the stunning landscapes of this island. We will seek to photograph unforgettable sunrises and sunsets alongside volcanic beaches with icebergs, glaciers, spectacular mountains, or powerful waterfalls. Additionally, we will aim to capture the beauty of the Northern Lights. Without a doubt, Iceland is one of the most dreamed-of destinations for photography enthusiasts worldwide. The island offers so many photographic opportunities that we will find incredible possibilities at every step. A photo tour like this one will allow you to photograph the most beautiful locations in the destination, taking hundreds of pictures, while learning and improving your photography. Throughout the trip, you will be accompanied by one or more of our photo guides with extensive experience in the destination, after many trips to the country, which will greatly facilitate work on the ground. Additionally, all the organization and details are handled by our travel agency for photography lovers. We have several years of experience and dozens of organized photo tours, which will make the experience much easier.
This Winter Iceland Photo Tour is entirely focused on landscape photography, both day and night. A land of fire and ice, Iceland is a true paradise of nature. Undoubtedly, one of the best destinations in the world if you love landscape and nature photography. Now, you can photograph its most spectacular locations with us. Additionally, we will likely find ice or snow, something that will add a special charm to this already magical destination. Again, we are talking about a perfect destination for winter landscape photography. Among the locations we will visit, highlights include waterfalls such as Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Kvernufoss, or Gullfoss, each more beautiful than the last; volcanic sand beaches like Reynisfjara, the beach on the Stokkssnes Peninsula, or the famous Diamond Beach, where icebergs from the Vatnajokull Glacier wash ashore; glacial lagoons like Jokulsarlon or Fjallsarlon, or impressive peaks and rock formations like Kirkjufell, Lomagnupur, or Vestrahorn. But, along with these incredible landscapes, we will also have time to photograph picturesque towns. Among them, we can highlight villages like Grundarfjördur, Vik, or Höfn. Some of the most beautiful churches on the island are located here, such as the ones in Budhir, Ingjaldsholl, Vik, or Hof. Finally, we will pay special attention to night photography as well. Iceland is one of the best destinations in the world to photograph the Northern Lights, so every night we will attempt to photograph the magical auroras. On our end, we will work diligently to capture this extraordinary natural phenomenon, and you can be sure that with a little luck, we will be able to capture the magical Northern Lights.
We organize this Winter Iceland Photo Tour in autumn and winter to maximize the chances of photographing fabulous winter landscapes as well as the Northern Lights. Additionally, the conditions will not be as harsh as traveling in January or early February, months when it would be very likely to encounter road closures and inaccessible areas. On one hand, traveling at this time of year, we will have many opportunities to find snow and ice formations, which will add great value when composing our images. Winter landscapes are perfect for photography, and traveling at this time will exponentially increase the photographic possibilities. But also, one of the biggest goals of the trip will be to photograph the Northern Lights. For many, capturing the incredible Northern Lights is the reason to visit Iceland, so we will do everything we can to make it happen. We will carry out several night sessions in search of the magical Northern Lights, a phenomenon we will pursue throughout our stay, and we will have many opportunities to photograph it traveling at this time. In addition to already studying solar activity forecasts and conditions, we will carefully analyze the chances of photographing the phenomenon every day, even considering moving to other locations to maximize the chances of success.
Our Winter Iceland Photo Tour is suitable for all levels, both physical and photographic, as well as for all ages. We consider this trip easy, so anyone can join this photo tour, as long as they enjoy photography. First, no minimum physical level is required to join the tour. Most of the locations we will photograph are very close to the parking lots or the places where we will stop. Therefore, most of the walks we will take will be very short and easy. There will only be one or two possible visits that will involve a slightly longer trek, but these will also be very easy. Additionally, there is no age limit, as long as one is reasonably healthy. On the other hand, no high level of photography experience is required, or prior experience taking photos. Our photo guides will help each participant on the ground, providing personalized attention tailored to each person’s level. This way, you will return home with spectacular images from the trip. Finally, no professional photography equipment is needed, not even a minimum amount of equipment to participate. Any camera will be enough to enjoy and make the most of the trip, although it’s true that for aurora photography, the highest quality possible is recommended. Although you will find a section on recommended equipment in each trip, it is only a list of ideal photographic equipment for the tour, but by no means essential to participate. To give you an idea, sometimes some of our clients come with compact cameras, and even take photos with their smartphones.
With all this, we offer you an extraordinary photo tour of Iceland, one of the most amazing destinations to capture all the magic of planet Earth. Pure nature in its fullest expression, which you will now have the opportunity to photograph with us. All this, with the guidance of a team of photo guides with vast experience in the destination, who will take you to the most beautiful locations, at the right time. The Winter Iceland Photo Tour will begin with the group meeting at Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, early in the morning. After introductions, we will set off on our route to the first destination of the trip, the town of Grundarfjordur, in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
We will aim to reach the area with enough time to explore it before sunset. We will head directly to the most impressive location on the peninsula, just outside the town: the Kirkufellsfoss waterfalls with the backdrop of the famous Kirkjufell peak. This mountain is the most photographed in Iceland, offering nearly endless photographic opportunities.
We will make the most of our time in the area, seeking out possible ice formations that will provide excellent photographic possibilities, staying by the waterfalls for sunset.
Once night falls, we will assess the chances of photographing the Northern Lights. If conditions are not favorable, we will take the opportunity to rest and prepare for the rest of the journey.
For our first sunrise of the trip, we will head to the Black Church of Budir, in the southern part of the peninsula. This tiny church, nestled in an extraordinary setting, surrounded by mountains to the north and the sea to the south, will offer us many fantastic composition possibilities.
After our sunrise session, we will explore much of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, photographing its most notable locations such as the cliffs of Arnarstapi or Londrangar, the stunning coastline west of Grundarfjordur, or the Ingjaldsholl Church.
We will photograph the sunset at the Gatklettur arch, an incredible coastal rock formation with dreamlike views.
Once again, we will be alert to the possibility of witnessing and photographing the Northern Lights.
Today we will photograph our last sunrise on the peninsula, revisiting the location from our first sunset session, Kirkjufell. We will take advantage of a different kind of light in the area, once again enjoying a wonderful session.
Afterwards, we will leave the area and head east, making our way to the southern part of the island. It will be a long day on the road, but we will take several photographic stops, including one to capture images of the beautiful Icelandic horses.
In the afternoon, we will have the chance to photograph some of the island’s most famous waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss. We will stay at Seljalandsfoss until after sunset, then head to our nearby hotel for rest.
Once again, if the opportunity arises, we will attempt to photograph the Northern Lights.
Once again, we will rise early to photograph Skogafoss waterfall at sunrise. We will arrive early to the area, allowing us to capture stunning portraits of the participants with the waterfall as a backdrop.
Afterwards, we will visit another nearby waterfall, much less crowded, which is reached after a short hike: Kvernufoss. This spectacular waterfall has formed a cave behind it, offering us an unforgettable view.
After making the most of the area, we will continue east, visiting one of the most photogenic spots in the south of the island, the cliffs of Dyrholaey and the lighthouse perched on the hill. With various stunning views, we will spend some quality time here.
Next, we will visit the Reynisfjara beach, one of the most famous in Iceland. This black sand beach, with dangerous waves, lies at the foot of a mountain, next to a cave with basaltic columns, making it a must-see location. After photographing the beach, we will stop in Vik to capture images of its charming church.
Then, we will continue east, making a few more stops along the way, such as at the spectacular Lomagnupur mountain.
Upon reaching our destination in Höfn, we will head to the Stokksnes Peninsula, where we will photograph the sunset at the base of the majestic Vestrahorn mountain. Alongside its beach, we will find beautiful black sand dunes, giving the area a truly unique character. This is one of the most spectacular locations in all of Iceland, so we will photograph it several times during the tour.
At night, we will try our luck with the Northern Lights. The Stokksnes beach is an ideal location for aurora photography, due to its orientation, with the Vestrahorn mountain to the north, and its unparalleled beauty.
Today, we will focus on photographing the surroundings of Höfn. We will return to Stokksnes for sunrise, and then head a few kilometers further east. From this area, we will capture stunning mountains reflected in small ponds, in a setting surrounded by glaciers and breathtaking views.
For sunset, we will return once again to the Stokksnes Peninsula, where we can photograph the majestic Vestrahorn reflected in the waters that wash the beach. The photographic possibilities in this area are vast, allowing each visit to be different, but always equally rewarding.
Once again, this area will be our main focus if there are chances of photographing the Northern Lights.
After photographing the sunrise, we will head east into the heart of Vatnajökull National Park, where we will spend the next two nights, giving us ample time to capture the most spectacular locations in the area.
We will spend much of the day visiting some of the park’s glacier tongues and the lagoons that form at their edges, such as Fjallsarlon Lagoon or the more famous Jokulsarlon Lagoon. Optionally, and for an additional fee, we can visit some of the incredible ice caves within Vatnajökull National Park.
We will photograph the sunset at another of our favorite spots in Iceland, Diamond Beach. Enormous chunks of ice break off from the Vatnajökull glacier, fall into Jokulsarlon Lagoon, and make their way through a channel to the sea, just a few meters from the lagoon. Once in the ocean, these icebergs, further fragmented and of various sizes, are pushed by the tides and waves onto the shore, where they get trapped on the black sand beach. As they are moved by the waves, they offer us endless photographic possibilities.
This landscape of icebergs on a volcanic beach, which seems out of this world, is in constant flux. Each time you visit, the conditions are different; the ice changes—its shapes, sizes, and the patterns the water creates around them… everything shifts, making this location an absolute dream for any photography enthusiast.
After sunset, we will seize any chance to try photographing the Northern Lights from the area’s stunning glacial lagoons.
Today, we will rise early to photograph the sunrise at Jokulsarlon Lagoon, where we can capture images of numerous icebergs floating on the water’s surface. This breathtaking landscape will allow us to spend several hours in the area without even noticing the passage of time.
Afterward, we will head west to visit the beautiful Hof Church, with its turf roof, one of the most iconic structures in all of southeast Iceland.
We will also take the opportunity to travel to the Skaftafell area, where we will photograph new glacier views, its tongues, and other glacial lagoons. Each one is equally spectacular, making this a truly productive and fulfilling day.
For sunset, we will descend to Fjallsarlon Lagoon, where we will continue taking photos until nightfall, and even stay longer if we see any opportunities to photograph the Northern Lights.
This will be our last full day on the island, and the day of our return journey west. We will rise early again to photograph Diamond Beach once more, this time under the light of sunrise.
After breakfast, we will embark on the long trip back west, making several stops along the route. We will take the opportunity to photograph any locations we missed
We will continue driving until we reach the surroundings of Selfoss, where we will spend the night. Once in the area, we will head to photograph one of the locations still pending on our trip, the Gullfoss waterfall, one of the most expansive and impressive in the southern part of the island.
Alternatively, depending on the group’s energy levels, we may take a hike to photograph another magical waterfall, the small Bruarfoss waterfall. In that case, we would aim to visit Gullfoss the following day.
Once our session is complete, we will look for any opportunity to capture what would be the last night of Northern Lights photography during our trip.
Depending on the flight schedules, we will try to photograph the sunrise from the waterfall we missed the previous afternoon.
After that, we will head to the last location of the trip, the area of Geysir and Strokkur, where we can capture an amazing boiling geyser.
After this grand finale of the trip, we will drive to Keflavik Airport, where this incredible journey will come to an end.
